Campus Integrations

This page provides a high-level view of how University of Waterloo systems use ORCID data. It is intended for campus stakeholders and project teams who want to understand what is available, what is approved, and what is currently in flight.

How campus tools use public ORCID data

Campus systems can consume public ORCID profile data to support:

  • researcher discovery and profile matching
  • publication and activity attribution
  • reduced duplicate data entry across institutional platforms

Public data access follows ORCID visibility settings and only uses data users have marked as public.

Example: CV Viewer

A lightweight browser-based tool that renders public ORCID profile content.

Print and Save PDF use the browser system print dialog inside the embedded viewer.

Non-Public Data use (Restricted)

ORCID allows users to mark parts of their profile as available to "Trusted Parties" only. Content set to this privacy level cannot be read through the default APIs provided by this service. ORCID account holders have full control over which items in their account have different privacy levels.

In order to access information designated as "Trusted Parties", application developers may request an API key from the Library, who will verify use-cases and security measures before providing an API key. Any system that intends to use "Trusted Parties" data must demonstrate that non-public data is handled correctly, and the use-case must be deemed valid.
